MedicAlert UK is proud to announce the launch of a new safeguarding initiative and dedicated website for the Herbert Protocol, aimed at supporting people living with dementia, their families and their carers in Banbury and the wider Thames Valley region.
The new platform, available at www.herbertprotocol.com/, offers vital resources and a free emergency support service designed to help protect some of the most vulnerable members of our community and is supported by police forces across the country including Thames Valley police.
Developed in collaboration with emergency services, this initiative enhances existing safeguarding measures in the Banbury area. One of the key features of the website is a secure space for families and carers to create a free user profile, allowing them to store completed Herbert Protocol forms within MedicAlert’s emergency service database.

The Herbert Protocol, named after George Herbert – a war veteran with dementia who tragically went missing – enables emergency services to access key information quickly if someone living with dementia is reported missing. Details such as medical conditions, routines and places of significance can be lifesaving.
Almost 1 million people are living with dementia in the UK, with around 40,000 reported missing for the first time every year. 7 in 10 people living with dementia will go missing at some point. For Banbury residents, this local rollout means better preparedness and faster response times when every second counts.
- Free and secure profile creation: Banbury families can now complete the Herbert Protocol and upload it for free to MedicAlert’s secure database, accessible by emergency services.
- Tailored resources and guidance: The website provides detailed support on how to fill in the protocol and keep it updated, along with helpful content for carers and people living with dementia.
- Faster emergency response: When someone is reported missing, police can contact MedicAlert on the 24/7 emergency helpline to access critical information, potentially reducing search time and improving outcomes.
- Local support: Supported by Thames Valley Police, the scheme adds a layer of protection to dementia care in Banbury and surrounding communities.
Rob Burley, CEO at MedicAlert UK, said: “We’re thrilled to bring the Herbert Protocol safeguarding scheme to Banbury. Making this tool accessible for local families, with the support of Thames Valley Police, offers real peace of mind. It helps ensure that if a loved one does go missing, critical information is immediately on hand to help bring them home safely."
