Falling ill and not being able to work is something no one hopes will ever happen to them.
However, when it does happen there are rules in place to help you get what you are entitled to receive from your employer.
As it stands, employers are legally required to pay their staff £92.05 a week if they are off sick for four days or more in a row for up to 28 weeks in total.
You currently receive statutory sick pay for all the days you are off sick, apart from the first three which are ‘qualifying days’.
However, following new employment rules from the government, many workers will see their entitlement to sick pay change in April.
What are the changes?
The changes could see some workers lose their entitlement if they drop below the new weekly income threshold for statutory sick pay.
At the moment, to qualify for sick pay you must earn at least £116 a week – around £23 a day. In April, the amount of money you need to earn will rise to £118 a week.
On the plus side, the changes will also prompt a rise in how much sick pay you are entitled to. The amount you receive if you become poorly is due to rise by £2.20, to £94.25.
The amount you will receive if you go on maternity or paternity leave is also going up, with it rising from £145.18 to £148.68 per week.
Who will lose out?
Those who work part-time could lose their eligibility to sick pay if their earnings fall below the new qualifying threshold.
