Boys and girls aged between eight to tent discussed what it might be like not to have a permanent home, job or have enough food and then spent part of an evening last month outside their headquarters with just a cardboard box to lie on.

The children then spent some time collecting non-perishable items from friends, relatives and neighbours that BYHP could use.

Altogether more than 12 boxes of items ranging from long life milk and tinned meat to pasta sauce and coffee were collected by Tim Tarby-Donald, BYHPS’s head of business and he also answered lots of questions.

Helen Barnby-Porritt, adult volunteer, said, “As a volunteer, it gives you a great sense of achievement when you see a young person master something new that you have taught them, especially when it is something

they wouldn’t get a chance to do outside Scouting. Their reaction is priceless.”

Nigel Taylor from the Scout Association, added: “Scouting provides great opportunities for young people to try out more than 200 activities, e.g. climbing or kayaking for the first time, help people in their community, have fun and make new friends. Each year we continue to attract more members and this is due to the exciting programme adult volunteers provide every week.”
