'We stand together,' say Banbury religious leaders in wake of Westminster attack

Faith leaders in Banbury have expressed their solidarity following the terrorist attack on Westminster Bridge in London on Wednesday.

In a joint statement Christian and Muslim leaders Rev Sue Burchell, Rev Jeff West, Rev Chris Gaynor, Tasadduq Husain, Ilyas Ahmed, Rev Anita Smith, Rev Philip Cochrane, and Canon Richard Cook said: “We stand together, in the light of the Westminster attack, to affirm our desire to see Britain free from extremist threats to our national way of life.

“We are committed to working closely within our many communities, in respect and friendship, for the benefit of our wider society.”

Four people have died, including a police officer, in the attack which saw a man drive into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge before trying to enter parliament armed with a knife. He stabbed an unarmed police officer before being shot by armed police.

He has been named as 52-year-old Khalid Masood, who was born in Kent, but lived in the west Midlands.
