The Warriner School to appear in annual review of education

Each year, several secondary schools across the country, which are either outstanding or have made significant improvements over the years, are invited to take part in a report aimed at highlighting best practice in education.

The review is being led by chancellor Philip Hammond and Stephen Timms, the Labour Party representative on the education select committee.

The report goes to over 35,000 leading policymakers including MPs, peers at the House of Lords, headteachers, vice-chancellors, government agencies and the Department for Education.

The report will be released early in the autumn of 2017 and will also include a summary of education news for the year.

Warriner headteacher, Annabel Kay, said the school was selected on the basis of its last Ofsted report in 2014 where it received a ‘good’ rating.

Dr Kay said she would be writing 1,000 words to go in the review which will include details on how the school is responding to changes in how results are measured including the introduction of the English Baccalaureate (Ebacc) measure.

She said: “It is not just about how the children do in exams but the subjects they choose. It is how you balance giving students a chance to choose their subjects while still giving guidance.

“It is how we restructure our options process to respond to this while making sure we are doing what is right for the students first and foremost.”

She added: “We have improved our results for the last three years and in 2015 our GCSE results put us into the top 100 schools nationally for sustained improvement which was the icing on the cake. To then be asked to do this is very much the cherry on top and is due to our year 11 achieving 70 per cent five or more A* to C grades with English and maths. I am so proud the monumental effort put in by students, their parents and our staff is getting this recognition at a national level.”
