A petition with 2,000 signatures demanding the installation of a roundabout at an accident blackspot near Shipston-on-Stour is being presented to Warwickshire County Council today (Thursday).

Councillor Jeff Kenner is a Stratford-on-Avon district councillor and set up the online petition following a fatal collision at the Portobello Crossroads, where the A429 Fosse Way and B4025 meet, on December 23 last year.

Julios Catachanas, 25, from Derbyshire, was killed in the collision and his sister Panayiota Catachanas issued a powerful statement in support of Mr Kenner’s campaign.

She said: “We hope this is the last accident we hear about on the Fosse Way. After the great loss of my dear brother I feel it’s about time to act and save lives. A roundabout must be built to make all drivers slow down and to make them aware of what lies ahead.”

The crossroads has been the scene of many accidents in the last 30 years, with a rising trend in the last three with nine accidents.

Mr Kenner, who is Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Stratford-on Avon, said: “This has been the fastest growing petition ever on the county council website. Local people are saying after Mr Catachanas’ tragic death, that enough is enough.

“My message to the council is clear – no more lives should be lost, no one else should have to suffer life-changing injuries at the Portobello Crossroads. Action must be taken now to improve safety. ”
