The government is being urged to stop the proposed expansion of RAF Croughton after another near-miss car crash with a suspected American driver on the wrong side of the road.

A left-hand-drive Chevrolet Camaro with no licence plates was filmed heading directly towards two of Harry Dunn's best friends in Bicester on Sunday (July 5).

The Northamptonshire family believe the United States' £200 million plan to station 1,500 more of its intelligence officials at the base would put more drivers at risk.

While South Northamptonshire MP Andrea Leadsom has secured an emergency debate in Parliament on Thursday to discuss the diplomatic implications of the scheme.

Family spokesman Radd Seiger said: "Enough is enough. The authorities are just not taking the matter seriously enough and are playing Russian roulette with our lives.

"It is absolutely certain that there is going to be another fatality or crash involving life-changing injuries."

Ed Bunker and Chelsea Wilson were leaving a friend's house when they turned on the A4421 in Caversfield, a well-known enclave of US and CIA personnel, at around 4.25pm.

The bright yellow Chevrolet drove towards them on their side of the road, Mr Bunker beeped his horn and moved to the left while the other driver, a bald man, made little attempt to correct himself.

Harry's pal said the cars missed by a matter of inches and they were both shook up by what happened, which Ms Wilson happened to film as her favourite song came on the radio.

"Are the authorities ever going to do anything about this? After Harry died, now more than ever we have an absolute right to feel safe on the roads where we live," Mr Bunker said.

"Many of us just don’t feel safe anymore. We are scared and angry. I have reported the incident to the police."

Harry, 19, died after his motorcycle was involved in a head-on crash with a car being driven on the wrong side of the road by an American woman coming from the airbase.

The driver, Anne Sacoolas, left the country and a campaign was started by the family for her to return - an extradition request was rejected after she was charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

This is the fourth such incident Harry's family are aware of in the close vicinity of RAF Croughton and they believe it is further evidence more US service personnel should not be permitted.

Mr Seiger said: "The fact that this happened to two of Harry’s best friends is incredibly shocking.

"Our campaign has been calling for urgent action to be taken about poor driving on the part of the visiting Americans from the moment Harry died."

Around 250 US military officers are currently based at RAF Croughton alongside 140 American defence contractors and a similar number of British officials.

Harry's family has successfully campaigned for changes to the road signs around the airbase as well as working with Northamptonshire Police to arrange extra driving training for Americans stationed there.

But they worry that more near-misses and potentially fatal crashes will occur if the expansion plans so Mr Seiger called on MPs to support Mrs Leadsom's debate.

"There can be no more expansion at RAF Croughton until Anne Sacoolas is back and until the issue of our safety is resolved once and for all," he said.

"It is a matter of our national security and I now call on everyone in authority on both sides of the Atlantic to resolve this needless mess once and for all now.

"Failing that, the calls for the bases to pack their bags and go home are only going to grow louder and louder."
