All police forces across Europe will be tackling vehicle occupants who fail to wear appropriate seatbelts throughout the week. The campaign started yesterday (Monday) and will finish on Sunday, March 20.

Thames Valley Police will conduct random checks throughout the force’s area at all times of the day and night. Drivers and or passengers who are caught not wearing a seatbelt will be issued with anything from a Fixed Penalty Notice to a summons to attend court.

During the campaign in March 2015, 754 offences were discovered in vehicles on the roads of Thames Valley. The law applies to all passengers as well as drivers.

Sgt Chris Appleby, from the Joint Roads Policing Unit, said: “Wearing a seatbelt is the simplest method to reduce your chance of being injured in a crash. Not wearing a seatbelt is foolhardy and irresponsible - it’s not worth the risk.”
