Swindler can go one better at Nottingham

The Dewhurst Stakes looks like being a vintage renewal at Newmarket on Saturday with the unbeaten Too Darn Hot Even money favourite at BetVictor to give John Gosden and Frankie Dettori more Group 1 glory.

The Middle Park winner Ten Sovereigns is 5/1 from 6s with BetVictor although he is not yet confirmed for the race with Aidan O’Brien having no fewer than eight of the 12 entries at the five-day stage. Sir Michael Stoute’s Sangarius is second favourite at 3/1.

The opener at Nottingham this afternoon looks a hot contest with Alfred Boucher, Mohaather and Swindler (1.30) all finishing runner up last time.

The vote goes to the last named, however, who may have bumped into a serious prospect when beaten by Magic J at Yarmouth last time. Gerald Mosse takes over in the saddle with William Buick riding at Kempton this evening.

There is a valuable 10f nursery and, with plenty of pace in the race, it promises to be a real test for these two-year-olds.

Prefontaine (3.30) is not guaranteed to appreciate the step up in trip on breeding, but he looked ready for the additional quarter mile when runner up at Haydock last time behind the exciting Cap Francais.

At Kempton, Buffalo River (5.40) has been a beaten favourite on his last couple of starts, but the form of his Doncaster third to Royal Marine with Turgenev in second is, arguably, the best maiden form so far this season with the winner going on to win the Group 1 Jean-Luc Lagardere at Longchamp on Sunday and the runner up winning his next couple of starts.

The blinkers that Silver Crescent (6.40) wore when runner up at Wolverhampton back in May are back on this evening and I feel this slight drop back in trip will suit Ralph Beckett’s gelding. Caspar The Cub would be giving the selection 2lbs if this were a handicap, but I just feel the headgear might be the key to Silver Crescent.

Tom George had a welcome winner at Uttoxeter on Sunday and the hope is that his Sumkindofking (4.10) can make a winning seasonal reappearance.

The selection would want a decent pace at this 2m 4f trip and the hope is that Gustave Mahler and/or Fair Exchange make it a decent test.

Excellent Team (4.40) won the corresponding handicap hurdle for Dan Skelton and Bridget Andrews 12 months ago from the same mark and the 6-y-old looked to be coming to hand when second at Worcester last time albeit from a 4lbs lower mark.

At Southwell Corner Creek (2.50) has not completed the course in three starts since winning over C&D from a 2lbs lower mark back in December. First time out might be the time to catch Michael Scudamore’s eight-year-old who is ridden by his brother Tom.

If there is a star on show this afternoon it could easily be Dissavril (3.20) who won a Market Rasen listed bumper on debut before running a shocker at Aintree back in the spring. The mare makes her hurdles debut this afternoon and she is an exciting prospect for Emma Lavelle running in the Limato colours of Paul Jacobs.
