A popular catering company that provides quintessential afternoon teas has won the people’s vote for its cup cakes and macarons.
The Chipping Norton Tea Set was hatched as a one-off vintage tea party but now provides its sumptuous spreads for wedding receptions and to numerous cafes and restaurants.
And its admirers have voted in droves to put the company at the top of the charts in the Cotswold Awards for two of its specialities.
Founder Victoria Wills said: “The Chipping Norton Tea Set was born four years ago out of an unusual request for my daughter Ellie’s 18th birthday. Having thought that a party was on the cards I was thrilled when she requested a vintage afternoon tea party! So, after scouring the local charity shops for pretty china and enlisting the help of Ellie’s uncle for the marquee, I set about providing my first afternoon tea for 65 guests, complete with flowers, bunting and balloons.
“My husband Steve came up with the apt, of-the-moment name! The Tea Set has gone from strength to strength, providing catering to customers from as far a field as Surrey, West Midlands and Wiltshire, from weddings for over 100 to intimate hen parties for eight.”
The Chipping Norton Tea Set now has a core staff of six in the summer and three in winter, with Mrs Wills’ husband helping out at weekends.
“Wherever possible we try to use local, free range ingredients in our cooking which pays dividends as our customers can tell the difference and appreciate our attention to detail.
“We were absolutely thrilled to be nominated for six awards at the inaugural Cotswolds Awards, finally winning two, The Best Cupcake in the Cotswolds and The Best Macaron in the Cotswolds. Both are firm favourites at our tea parties.
“What sets the awards apart from all others and makes them that little bit more special to us, is the unique and inclusive nomination system. Businesses and the general public put forward companies they believe deserve an award and suggest categories.
“The public cast all the votes too - meaning people all over the Cotswolds get to voice their opinion and share what they love most about all things local.”
The Tea Set provided logo-ed cupcakes and an afternoon tea for the judges of The Great British High Street Award. Chippy will find out on November 30 if it has won.
