Banbury MP Sir Tony Baldry has spoken out saying he is ‘at a loss to understand’ the move to close the phone box library initiative outside St John’s Church in South Bar on health and safety grounds.
Sir Tony said: “Sometimes I have to check that I am not losing a sense of perspective but I am somewhat at a loss to understand how a few books in a telephone booth can be a health and safety issue. Indeed, I would be interested to know just how many telephone calls are actually made from that telephone box on a weekly basis.
“It is one of the wonderful Gilbert Scott red telephone boxes that I suspect was retained because South Bar in Banbury is a conservation area and the red telephone box has been part of the area for as long as anyone can remember.
“I don’t actually think people are queuing up there to make telephone calls and I would be amazed if any telephone user had felt threatened by a few books or whether the Health & Safety Executive would deem a few books in a telephone box unsafe!
“But as I say, I keep on having to pinch myself to make sure I am retaining a sense of perspective on all this!”
