Shipston woman cautioned after posting homophobic content on Facebook

A 25-year-old woman from Shipston-on-Stour has been issued with an official police caution after posting homophobic content in the comments of a public Facebook page.

This type of social media offence is becoming a regular problem for police and as a result of the incident a local safer neighbourhood team police officer was kept busy for almost an entire day and not visible in the community.

PC Craig Purcell said: “This is not the first time matters such as this have been reported in the Shipston Policing area. A single sentence can cause offence and result in Police investigation.

“The most common comments I see surround the travelling community or the ethnicity of people posted as suspects. Aside from the time it takes to investigate these matters they are also completely unacceptable.

“We do not tolerate hate crime or comments on social media which are abusive or harassing.

“Please consider your comments when posting to public social media accounts. Not only do they have potential legal consequences for you but they have a wider impact on your community.”
