The RSPCA has launched an investigation after a member of the public found the cockerel, now called Echo, by Ell’s Lane on January 24.

He was inside a shabby wooden carrier strewn by the side of the road and was bleeding from several nasty-looking injuries.

The RSPCA was called to the scene and rushed him to a local vets for treatment, where Echo met his new owner and made a recovery.

RSPCA animal collection officer Dennis Lovell said: “Echo is lucky to have been found as it is a fairly remote area. There are not a lot of people or houses around there and he is lucky these kind people stopped to take a look.

“My heart sank when I arrived as I could see there was quite a lot of blood. He had lost an eye and looked as though he was in a pretty bad way so I really wasn’t sure if he was going to make it or not.

“I kept my fingers crossed for him though and he made it through. His charming ways have even landed him a loving new home with a member of staff at the vets who lives on a farm nearby.

“He suits his new name as he does like a good old crow and he’s a bit of a character – he certainly made it known he was there in the van with me and it did make me chuckle. It’s really made my week to see him get a second chance at life and to go to such an experienced home with someone who will care for him properly – he’s really hit the jackpot.

“We are looking to speak to anyone who might know a bit more about Echo, where he might have come from, and how he might have ended up being cruelly abandoned on the roadside like this. All calls to us are treated in the strictest of confidence.”
