Royal theme as most popular baby names in Banburyshire revealed

The most popular baby names in Banburyshire in 2017 have been revealed, with a royal boys' name coming out on top for all four districts.

Harry was the most common name given to baby boys in Cherwell, Stratford-on-Avon and South Northamptonshire districts last year, according to the Office for National Statistics.

In West Oxfordshire, Harry was tied with Benjamin and George, continuing the royal theme.

For girls though there was little continuity with several different names among the most popular across the region.

Poppy was a popular choice for parents in West Oxon and Stratford, while Ava and Olivia were top in Cherwell, with Florence and Freya in South Northants.

Last year, there were 679,106 live births, with babies being given 63,697 distinct names and with just 73 unique names ranking first across 347 local areas.

The top ten boys’ names nationally were given to 13 per cent of all boys born last year, whereas the top ten girls’ names were given to ten per cent of girls.

Analysis suggests that boys’ names are more homogenous, with there being a comparatively narrower selection of names (7,000 fewer) despite there being 17,000 more boys than girls born in 2017.
