A little over two weeks since voting opened on October 18, Banbury has fallen into second place between Blackburn, Lancashire, and Hemel Hempstead, in the town centre category.

In a bid to boost the town’s chances, the Banbury town team is taking its campaign to the market.

The vote runs until November 18 and counts for 50 per cent of the final decision.

Town team members will run a market stall as part of the Banbury Thursday Market today to encourage local people to vote.

They will be equipped with smartphones and tablets so that people can vote there and then, and also hand out information about the awards.

Lynn Pratt, Cherwell District councillor for estates and the economy, said: “We believe the story we have to tell is a strong one, centring on the way our town centre businesses, the town and district councils, and community groups and individuals are working together.

“They have promoted some great town centre events like the Old Town parties, the night market, GeekCon, and the Banbury Presents performance series. Our story also emphasises the work that’s being done to bring in new national and independent businesses to join those we have already. With thanks to the team at Sketts Markets, we have chance to share this story with people visiting our town centre on that Thursday, and encourage them to support Banbury for the awards every day until November 18.”

High Streets minister Andrew Percy added: “Over 100,000 votes have been cast in the competition so far, proving that people are passionate about their high streets up and down the country.

“Banbury did fantastically well to make it into the final three, but now every vote counts and they need an extra push to get them title of Britain’s best high street.”

The Artery is also a finalist in the #BestGBTwitterShop category which is being run completely on social media.
