Members of Cherwell District Council’s green team will declare war on litter when they undertake a five-day blitz of a Banbury estate.

Between Monday and Friday of next week residents on Bretch Hill will be encouraged to support the street cleansing team as they target issues including litter, graffiti and flytips.

Householders will be able to sign up for free bulky waste collection services and attend a free recycling roadshow to pick up freebies including food caddies and dog poo bags or discounted bins and caddy liners.

Councillor Debbie Pickford, Cherwell’s lead member for clean and green, said: “Having just finished our first blitz of the year in Bicester we are now preparing to work our magic on one of Banbury’s largest estates.

“The idea of the blitzes is to give residents a head start in keeping their local estate tidy – by clearing it of rubbish now all residents need to do is take responsibility for their own litter in the future and it will keep the area gleaming.

“Our street cleansing team will be going above and beyond their usual duties to get Bretch Hill looking pristine but it doesn’t end there. By offering initiatives such as the recycling roadshow and free bulky waste collections, it will hopefully encourage the residents to join in and help keep the area clean and green for everyone.”

Throughout the week the team will target hotspot areas and investigate reports of flytips, abandoned cars and dog fouling.

They will also visit residents to discuss issues such as contaminated bins which have been rejected by crews to help people resolve any points of confusion.

On Thursday, February 18 the team will then host a free recycling roadshow at the Orchard Way shops from 3pm – 5pm. Residents can receive free waste, recycling and energy advice which could offer savings on household bills and will hand out free food caddies and dog poo bags.

There will also be opportunities to purchase buy-one-get-one-free food caddy liners and discounted blue and/ or brown recycling bins which will be on sale for just £10 each – a saving of up to £8 on the usual price. Furthermore, all bins will come with a lifetime guarantee so if they are damaged or stolen they will be repaired or replaced free of charge.
