Mr Hugo is a volunteer at the hospice’s Chipping Norton shop and also helps maintain the hospice grounds twice a week throughout the year.

“I am excited about the challenge. I hope not only to experience this amazing place but also to raise a donation for a charity I feel passionate about,” he said. “The hospice provides important care to those battling terminal illness and I want to support them in continuing to do so.”

Ray will leave the UK on April 15, arriving in the Peruvian city of Cusco the following day and exploring the historic city before beginning the trek, which at its peak reaches an altitude of over 14,000 feet.

Having completed the challenge, Ray hopes to fulfil another adventurous ambition - white water rafting - before flying home.

To ensure Katharine House Hospice receives every penny raised, Ray is funding the trip himself. He is hoping to raise £1,000, which will be enough to fund the Hospice’s Bereavement Service for a whole month. The trek to the ruins of Machu Picchu covers 44 miles and at its peak reaches 14,000 feet. To donate see https://www.justgiving.com/ray-hugo
