A well-known Banbury environmentalist was arrested while trying to make a citizen’s arrest of David Cameron, George Osborne and Energy Secretary Ed Davey.
Paul Mobbs was arrested after a four-hour peaceful standoff at the gates of Downing Street last Thursday.
He said he had no choice but to try to make a citizen’s arrest of those in Cabinet who be claims have committed ‘misconduct in office’ for not giving due consideration to the views of the public over the controversial method of gas extraction known as ‘fracking’.
Mr Mobbs was detained under the Terrorism Act for blocking Downing Street.
Cameraman Rikki Indemedia filmed proceedings and a video has been released on You Tube.
He said: “We have uploaded a short film of Paul’s attempt to perform a citizen’s arrest on members of the UK Cabinet and his own arrest. He was released later that evening having been told he may be summonsed at some point by Westminster Court under Anti-Terrorism (Road Management) legislation.”
Mr Mobbs told the Banbury Guardian: “Politicians are required by their oath of office to abide by the law and follow procedure. That’s what they’re not doing in the case of ‘fracking’. Therefore when the executive refuses to listen to reason, when they have deliberately refused to consult or respond to the public’s concerns and when they have made judicial review impossible for the average person to obtain, all we have left is to do as citizens is to enforce the law ourselves.”
“The trouble is we have no way in this country of holding the executive to account. That’s because we elect MPs, not the members of the Government.”
Mr Mobbs – a high-profile figure on the environmental issues around fracking and other methods of ‘extreme’ energy– had with him research that he claimed would be admissible in any trial.
Mr Indemedia said: “Eventually he stated he was going to use his body to block any traffic coming in or out of Downing Street. At this point a police van turned up and he was arrested. Mr Mobbs went peacefully and was later released.
