Protein shakes recalled over allergy risk

A health product manufacturer is recalling a batch of protein shakes because they contain potential allergens not mentioned on the label.

Premia Health is updating its recall of Premia Whey (Milk Chocolate, Strawberry and Vanilla flavours) because they contain undeclared soya and gluten, and Protein Active Shakes (including Diet Whey and Protein) because they contain undeclared gluten.

Protein shakes and other supplements have exploded in popularity in recent years - according to Euromonitor figures worldwide sales of sports related protein products grew from £2.5bn in 2007 to £4.9bn in 2012 and are likely to reach £7.8bn in 2017.

In the UK sales increased from £73m in 2007 to £170m in 2012 and are expected to reach £358m by 2017.

Protein supplements are popular with bodybuilders, but have found popularity with gym goers of all levels.

The Whey and Active Shakes products are added to previous recalls to give a list:of recalled products (with any ‘Best before’ dates except where noted):

Protein Active Shake (including Diet Whey and Protein), Belgian Chocolate, Strawberry and Vanilla flavours (50g) - undeclared soya, egg and gluten

Premia Whey, Milk Chocolate, Strawberry and Vanilla flavours (908g) - undeclared egg and gluten

Protein Active Protein Shot (40g) - undeclared egg

Protein Active Energy Shot, (40g) - undeclared egg

Protein Active Paleo Protein Bar (50g) with Best before dates prior to October 2016 - undeclared soya

Protein Active Paleo Protein Bar (50g) with ‘Best before’ end: 31st January 2017 and lot number: 064615 undeclared soya, egg and gluten.

A company statement read: “If you have bought any of the above products and have an allergy to soya and/or an allergy or intolerance to egg and/or an or intolerance to gluten, do not consume them. Instead, return them to the store where you purchased it for a full refund, or call their Customer Service team on 02890 918 392.”
