Popular Banbury dentist retires after giving people something to smile about for 43 years.

Mr Amsel started the practice in Banbury’s High Street with partners in 1972. His colleague Peter Wilkins retired in 2013.

In that time Mr Amsel has performed all kinds of dentistry from regular mouth care to orthodontics, implants and cosmetic treatments.

Working with specialist dental nurse Sally Chadwick the pair are known internationally for their teaching work on innovative ‘four-handed dentistry’ that makes treatment better for patient and practitioners.

“I’ve loved working and I’ve loved my patients. I’ve had terrified patients with bad mouths whose confidence has improve hugely with the improvement in their teeth and their smiles,” he said.

Having had some 900 patients on his books at any one time, Mr Amsel is proud to have kept 30 - 40 per cent of them for the four decades of his career.

He looks forward to more golf and gardening as well as helping his wife with her 14 Italian Greyhounds which she shows. The family runs a luxury dog hotel, Hayfields, at Lower Catesby near Daventry.

Mr Amsel’s last surgery is on Tuesday, April 26. Partners who have taken over the practice continue the service.
