Pony dies in collision after vandals cut field fence

Sid, a four-year-old Quantock Hills pony, had to be put to sleep after his leg was broken during the collision which happened on Broughton Road this morning, Thursday.

Sid’s owner Barbara Conner, noticed at around 7.30am that Sid wasn’t in his field and the traffic outside was slowing down. She then noticed Sid on the road.

She said: “We had to have Sid put down. Someone had cut through three strands of wire in our fence so he could get out.

“It was an exercise in stupidity, cutting my fence.

“He was four-years-old. He was really going to be a super pony. He came off the moors in Exmoor when he was a foal. He was going to be a superstar.

“I was going to give him to my granddaughter as her pony club pony. He could really jump.”

She added there were three other horses in the field and she was surprised they hadn’t escaped.

The car, which was involved in the accident, was a write-off and the driver has been taken to hospital, although his injuries are not believed to be serious.

Mrs Conner said: “I can’t believe someone would cut the fence when there are animals in the field. We’ve had problems before – around three months ago, we had a pony shot by a pellet.

“We back onto Bretch Hill – we’ve had trouble on and off over the years.”
