Well shiver me timbers! Little landlubbers at Grange County Primary School were visited by pirate captain Rocky Cliff as part of their new topic – Ship Ahoy!

They learned all about life aboard a pirate vessel which Captain Rocky told them would include scrubbing the decks, reading treasure maps and possibly even walking the plank.

His guidance obviously paid off because the little learners – who designed and wore their own pirate costumes – managed to find the hidden loot on their treasure hunt.

Their response to the topic has been outstanding, as deputy head Mrs Jude Barratt acknowledged.

She said: “It’s so important for children to be enthused by their education. They’ve learned key skills about co-operation and team work through hands-on experience.

“We’ve already started making pirate flags using a range of art techniques.”
