Knights of Middle England present The Viking Raiders in a fabulous new show at Warwick Castle

Warwick Castle's fantastic new Viking Raiders stunt show is a big hit

Warwick Castle has done it again, bringing history to life in a brilliant new summer stunt show – this time a Viking Raiders spectacular.

The new show is inspired by true Viking history and presented in the castle grounds by the Warwickshire-based Knights of Middle England.

It tells a story of one of the most powerful women in history, Aethelflaed, Lady of the Mercians, who was at the heart of Warwick Castle’s story and she paved the way for its foundations on the banks of the River Avon.

Ben Kay, Warwick Castle’s resident historian. said: “Lady Aethelflaed is an important historical figure for Warwick Castle and one of the most powerful women in history.

"We are delighted to be honouring her in Viking Raiders. Staging this show near Aethelflaed’s Mercian burh (or stronghold) is extra special and makes the history feel immediate and alive.

"It isn’t just something to be watched, it’s a way for guests to experience the story right at the heart of the battle, cheering as the fate of Mercia hangs in the balance.”

The show was a huge hit with the crowds of schoolchildren when we visited. The youngsters really got into the spirit of the adventure, cheering Aethelflaed as she fought to save Mercia.

Daughter of Alfred the Great and England’s first warrior queen, she fearlessly and brilliantly rallies the Saxons against the Viking invaders in this exciting performance.

Expect breathtaking horseback riding, daredevil stunts, flaming arrows, roaring pyrotechnics and epic sword fights - all staged against the spectacular backdrop of Warwick Castle and keeping the whole family on the edge of their seats.

The Viking Raiders show is on until July 17 and the cost is included in a daytime admission ticket to Warwick Castle.

As well as the chance to see the magnificent interior, Warwick Castle offers a host of activities including the UK’s largest birds of prey display, The Falconer’s Quest, where magnificent birds soar high overhead.

The Legend of the Trebuchet is back too, with Britain’s largest working siege engine taking the spotlight in a dramatic live show. For younger guests, the Realm of Zog, which includes Zog Playland, is packed full of fun for little dragons.
