Review: US attraction offers quality dining in its new Conservatory restaurant near Banbury

The US venue RH at Aynho Park, near Banbury, has launched a new restaurant. Senior reporter Roseanne Edwards went along to try it out – here is her review.

The Conservatory is a former stable block of the 400-year-old Aynho Park estate. It has been transformed into a delightful Mediterranean scene with the accent on comfort, great service and a superb menu.

The skylit restaurant offers a curated menu of American and Mediterranean classics to enjoy amid heritage olive trees and crackling Cotswold limestone fireplaces.

Fast food, it is not. Here you relax and take your time over special food. Yes, you can get a burger but this is an exceptional version – the RH Burger containing succulent beef, American cheese, pickles, onions and Dijonnaise.

A meal at The Conservatory assures you an opportunity to indulge yourself in the elegant surroundings of this beautiful space – with a toasty fire in cold weather and open windows onto the sun drenched terrace in the summer – British weather allowing.

The food is varied and exceptional. You can start your meal with delectable and highly recommended Caviar Carpaccios – choose from beef, scottish salmon, bluefin toro, avocado or stone bass.

If you want to follow the American experience you might want to try Mama’s Meatballs. Or enjoy charcuterie and cheese with a warm baguette, strawberry preserves and grapes.

Caviar features as an option in most sections of the menu and The Parisian Petite Baked Potato provides the delicious combination of Petrossian Kaluga Caviar, creme fraiche and chives as its special additions. Other potatoes include The American (with bacon, cheddar, chives and creme fraiche) or The Classic with sea salt, chive butter and creme fraiche.

The range of fresh salads - Gem, Caesar and Arugala – can be accompanied by your choice of rotisserie chicken, roasted scottish salmon, buttered lobster, filet mignon or avocado.

The Conservatory chef’s signature salads feature chicken, lobster, Chinese chicken and green bean – rest assured these will delight the palate.

There is a list of mouth-watering, speciality sandwiches including the aforesaid RH Burger as well as the unforgettable lobster roll in brioche, a reliable steak sandwich and rotisserie chicken.

Pace yourself in preparation for the main courses and choose from steak frites, rotisserie chicken, roasted salmon, petite filet, fish and chips or cauliflower steak.

The menu offers sides and frites to suit your taste. And spend some time invoking your appetite as you browse through the drinks menu – which features some American classic cocktails, with fine wines and beers. Beavertown Neck Oil IPA 6 and Hawkstone beers are just two of the beers selection available.

Deserts include sticky toffee pudding, tiramisu, affogato and butterscotch brulee – there is a desert wine list to accompany this course.

The Conservatory offers a list of soft beverages, teas and coffees for those who are sticking with Dry January, or simply to enjoy to bring your meal to a close.

Check out the menu here or take a trip to RH – wander round this incredible country house and its displays of RH furniture, visit its different eating places, the tea salon and juicery. You will be able to take a peek inside The Conservatory to satisfy yourself that a meal here will be a memorable outing.
