‘As soon as we called his name he meowed at us and gave us lots of love and purred’ – after six years away, Sam knew he was back where he belongs.

The story of Sam the cat’s rescue from a Banbury building site by Cherwell Cats Protection brought a warm glow to this week’s news agenda.

The Banbury Guardian shared how the fact that Sam was microchipped allowed his rescuers to take him to the vets and then reunite him with his owners - an extraordinary six years after he had disappeared.

It was a story that brightened up the day for many of our readers – and we can now bring you even more of the story.

We were contacted by Anne-Marie who discovered we had done the story and said, as Sam’s owners, they were ‘over the moon’.

She takes up the tail, sorry, the tale: “When I first got the call a week ago last Saturday it was 3.30pm and a lady from the Hart vets in Bicester said, ‘I am ringing regarding your lost cat’.

"I was a bit lost and wondered if they had the right person, that's when she said, ‘You have a grey cat called Sam’.

"I said yes but he went missing the day we moved house six years ago and we hadn't seen him since.

"We were both speechless and still couldn't believe it, we went straight to the vets in Bicester that Saturday still thinking it must have been a mistake but as soon as we saw him we knew it was him, we both cried tears of joy,” she added.

“He is 16 years old now and he has lost a lot of weight, and has a mass in his abdomen which, being his age, we have been advised to leave it as he isn't in pain and is very happy.

"We don't know how long he has but he is back where he belongs - but what is more amazing is that as soon as we called his name he meowed at us and gave us lots of love and purred.”
