Guest speaker, Claire Millington, will present a talk entitled 'I shall expect you sister' on the lives and letters of frontier households in the Imperial Roman Army.

Claire has been researching the extraordinary survival of personal letters between people at the furthest reaches of the Roman Empire. Successful men from Rome’s provinces could be called up to command military units on the frontiers.

With them went their households, their wives, children, freed and enslaved men and women. These people wrote to each other using ink pens on thin slips of wood. Remarkably, some letters survive and offer a glimpse of household life at Roman forts.

The lecture will take place on Thursday, February 13 at 7.30pm in Banbury Museum.

Claire Millington's interest in the Roman Empire was sparked after she was posted to Rome as a diplomat. Once back in the UK she embarked on an MA, thanks to the OU, and is finishing a Classics PhD at King’s College, London.

The event is free to members; non- members are welcome for just £3.
