Banburyshire village to take action on dog poo using fluorescent paint to shame owners

Adderbury Parish Council says it is supporting a plan to shame dog owners into clearing up after their pets.

The council is following many others across the county which have introduced spray painting dog faeces piles that have not been bagged and binned by owners walking their animals.

Adderbury parish councillors say on their website: "The Parish Council is supporting a new initiative to tackle dog fouling in the village, which involves spraying with a fluorescent paint, dog mess which has not been picked up by dog owners.

"This will hopefully make it obvious just how bad the issue is in the village and also shame those who do not pick up after their dogs into doing so."

Dog fouling is not only deeply unpleasant but dangerous. Whilst rare, contact with dog excrement can cause toxocariasis – a nasty infection that can lead to dizziness, nausea, asthma and even blindness or seizures according to the Keep Britain Tidy.

The organisation says there are estimated to be more than eight million dogs producing more than 1,000 tonnes of mess every day in the UK alone.

While most dog owners are caring, responsible individuals, there are still some people who do not clean up after their pets, they say.

Anyone who fails to clear up after their dog can be issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice of up to £100. If the case goes to court this could cost the owner or person in charge of the animal up to £1,000.

The law states that being unaware a dog has fouled or not having a suitable bag is not a reasonable excuse.

Adderbury Parish Council is urging anyone in the village who is concerned about dog fouling and would like to support its new initiative to contact the clerk at [email protected]
