A weightlifter from Banbury is getting ready to lift a massive 250,000kgs - and raise money in memory of a popular friend.

Local trainer Chris Jackson has set himself the challenge of deadlifting 100kgs, 2,500 times for a total of 250,000kgs lifted.

And all donations for the charity lift will go towards the Katharine House Hospice, in memory of John Turney, who recently died of cancer.

Chris said: "A lot of people knew John Turney (JT) and quite frankly he was taken from us far too soon.

"Even though his funeral was on the October 23, many people did not realise how ill he had gotten, or that he even had cancer at all.

"There was a massive sense of shock felt by everyone who knew him, including myself.

"I still don't think it's sunk in properly. He could have packed out the crematorium that Friday many times over, but because of the pandemic numbers were limited to 30. It was an honour to be there.

"He will not be forgotten in a hurry, that's for sure, but I wanted to do something to honour him, and to help Katharine House Hospice who do such fantastic work in tough circumstances.

"They are still helping JT's wife Mitch through what is a very difficult time."

The charity weighlift is happening on Friday December 18 at EP gym in Banbury and is going to be live streamed on Facebook.

"It's certainly going to take a while to complete!" said John.

"The challenge has changed a bit since the idea was formed, but whilst it'll be me aiming for 250,000kgs, lots of others have offered to help with deadlifting, which is amazing!

"So the actual total number of kilograms lifted by the end of it should be significantly higher.

"Any donations, big or small, would be greatly received. If you would like to support me on the day and get involved, just send me a message on Facebook or Instagram."
