Events organised for May and June – including the Banbury and District Show and Armed Forces Day – had already been called off.

Attempts will be made to reschedule some events where possible, but this is heavily dependent on how the future months evolve.

Cllr Colin Clarke, chairman of the council’s general services committee, said: “It is with much regret that these events have been cancelled.

"A lot of work has gone into planning them and I know how much townspeople look forward to them. But coronavirus guidance is quite clear and we must abide by what the government is saying.

"We can only hope that lockdown restrictions will be eased further so that our autumn events – including Battle of Britain Parade, Motown Magic, A Day of Transport, and Christmas Lights Switch On – can go ahead.”
