Banbury area school girl cycles more than 200 miles during lockdown for charity

A Banbury area school girl has cycled more than 230 miles for charity during the lockdown.

Jorgie Gillett, an 8-year-old pupil from Middleton Cheney Primary School, launched a cycle challenge on May 1 to benefit the charity, Dementia Oxfordshire.

She set herself a cycling target of 500 miles between May 1 and August 31. As she has already nearly reached her target having cycled 236 miles she plans to continue cycling until August 31.

Jorgie has also already doubled her fundraising target of £250. But she hopes to raise as much as possible for Dementia Oxfordshire.

"It's great she wants to get out on the bike rather than sitting around, watching TV.

"She’s cycling around the local villages with her dad (Michael Gillett), who is a member of Banbury Star Cycling Club.

"So he is able to support her, and plan safe cycle routes. Her longest ride was 18 miles, and she managed to do it in a impressive 1 hour 32 minutes. She's been amazed with everyone’s generosity, that she's managed to smash her £250 target.

"The money raised will help Dementia Oxfordshire continue to support persons with dementia to live well."
