Console Corner: Capcom let slip Street Fighter V release date?

The big news this week is that Capcom – the guys behind the Street Fighter games – have “accidentally” revealed the release date for the fifth iteration of the franchise.

Ryu and co are back next spring ... apparently

On its Unity blog, Capcom supposedly inadvertently revealed the game will be released on March 31 2016 for PC and PlayStation 4.

It is not yet clear whether the post was inaccurate or premature but the wording has since been altered and now contains no mention of the spring 2016 release window.

Capcom previously announced an online beta programme for Street Fighter 5 on PlayStation 4 and PC, with players who pre-order the game automatically enrolled.

A start date for the beta will be revealed in the near future. Street Fighter fans who own Xbox One will be disappointed that, in terms of consoles, the game will be exclusive to PlayStation 4 in an unusual move for the franchise.

But Xbox boss Phil Spencer – not the bloke off Location, Location, Location – has vowed to “make amends” to Xbox One fans.

Responding on Twitter to a fan who said they could forget about Street Fighter V not coming to Xbox One if Microsoft would deliver a new Banjo-Kazooie or Conker game, Spencer replied:

“Love the idea of game franchise bartering, I’ll work on making amends for SF,” he said.

Spencer did not share any further details regarding how he intends to “make it up to fans” and remained calm over the issue saying it is “Just business and part of competition.”

In other games news PS4 subscribers got a bumper treat this month when March’s FOUR free Playstation Plus games were rolled out.

Gamers got a brilliant haul of games including Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee — New ‘n’ Tasty which was previously £17.99, Valiant Hearts: The Great War, OlliOlli2: Welcome to Olliwood and CounterSpy which to my mind is the best offering since the council’s launch.
