New scheme to help prevent more flooding in King's Sutton

King’s Sutton has suffered from flooding for many years and with the final block of funding in place it is hoped the scheme will be protecting homes in the village by the end of the year.

Councillor Dermot Bambridge, portfolio holder for environmental services at South Northamptonshire District Council, said: “Flooding is a serious issue for many parts of the district, however King’s Sutton has been worst affected in recent years.

“Although we no longer have the responsibility for flooding issues, it was unanimously agreed that we should see this project through. We are pleased to be able to help bring some security to the village and will now work closely with other parties involved to ensure the new scheme is implemented.”

As well as the Enivronmental Agency, the flood alleviation scheme will be funded by contributions from King’s Sutton Parish Council and the district council.

It will involve re-routing the Black Brook away from the rear of the properties on Wales Street, and the construction of a flood embankment along the old route of the brook to prevent water flooding homes.

It is hoped that the scheme will start to be delivered in late spring, subject to legal agreements.

Councillor Ian Morris, district councillor for King’s Sutton, said: “Ever since I was first elected five years ago, the delivery of the flood alleviation scheme in the village has been my number one priority. “This truly has been a collaboration of all parties, including our MP Andrea Leadsom, South Northamptonshire Council, Northamptonshire County Council, the Environmental Agency and the determination of the parish council and the affected land owners, who have donated the land upon which the scheme is to be built.

“I look forward to seeing the scheme completed.”
