NEW: M40 reopens eight hours after multi-vehicle fatal accident

The M40 motorway has reopened more than eight hours after a multivehicle collision this morning, Saturday, on the northbound carriageway between Junctions 9 and 10.

Police were called at 7.50am to the collision which involved a now confirmed figure of 33 vehicles and resulted in one fatality.

One person remains critically ill and six people are being treated for serious injuries. All were taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.

Six people with minor injuries were taken to Banbury’s Horton General Hospital. A further 49 people involved in the collision were assessed at the scene.

Insp Daren Courtenay, from the Joint Operations Unit for Roads Policing, said: “Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of the man who died at the scene and specially-trained officers are supporting his relatives at this time.

“An investigation in to the cause of the collision is ongoing. The scene officers were faced with was complex and required a large amount of investigation, of working with partner agencies to ensure those involved received the appropriate medical treatment, and the subsequent recovery of the vehicles involved.

“I would like to thank motorists for their patience while the section of the M40 was closed.”
