Banbury motorists getting ready to head home for the weekend can still expect delays on roads in the town this evening (Friday) after the earlier crash on the M40.
A male driver died at the scene following a collision with a van and three lorries on the northbound carriageway between junctions 11 and 12 at about 11.15am.
A female passenger was taken to the University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire with what police described as ‘life-changing’ injuries. The drivers of the lorries involved were all uninjured.
Police were not allowing motorists onto the motorway at junction 11, resulting in a diversion through Banbury and out of town on the B4100 towards junction 12 at Gaydon.
One lane has since reopened following the crash, but traffic is still very heavy in the area with congestion expected back to junction ten (Brackley). Drivers are advised to avoid the area if possible.
