Kids '˜evacuated' to Upton

Dressed in 1940s clothing, labelled with tags and carrying their gas masks, they spent the day learning about Upton House during the war, Digging for Victory and what it was like to live during the 1940s.

With members of staff and volunteers the children visited the gardens, explored the Anderson Shelter, and learned about how the land had to be used to its best potential during the war, in order to have enough to eat.

They even got their hands dirty and did some seed planting to aid the war effort.

Inside the house, they learned about the people who lived there during the Second World War, how M. Samuel & Co Bank operated there and about the reality of keeping safe and fed during wartime.

Upton House and Gardens is currently in the final year of its awardwinning Banking for Victory exhibition, giving an insight into life during the Second World War.
