Just before 4.10pm, firefighters from Hook Norton, Chipping Norton and an enhanced rescue vehicle from Banbury were called to Station Road where two cars had collided, one of which was overhanging the walled edge protecting a near vertical drop and lake immediately below.

Both cars had blocked the road. Both drivers were injured and while one was able to walk free, fire crews had to remove the roof of the other car to release the trapped driver.

Thames Valley Police and South Central Ambulance Service helped with road closures, safety and casualty care.

Incident commander, crew manager Nigel Matthews, said: “This was a tragic incident of a couple who collided going in opposite directions. In all my years I have never been called to such an incident.

“Fortunately, the speed and weight of attack by all three emergency services meant that we were quickly able to bring the scene under control and ensure a controlled rescue of the trapped driver.

“I would like to remind all drivers of the need to be prepared for heavy downpours at this time of the year – ensure your wiper blades are in good working order and that you reduce your speed accordingly, as surfaces can become temporarily flooded and slippery so stopping distances will increase.”
