More than 35 firefighters from three counties tackled a hay bale fire in Hanwell last night (Tuesday).

Crews from Oxfordshire, Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service attended the incident after reports of the fire at Park Farm, Gullicote Lane at about 7.40pm.

The nearest crew based in Banbury were dispatched and on arrival were faced with a large stack of straw bales covering an area of 75 metres by 15 metres and several metres high totally involved in fire.

Supporting crews were called for and at its height a total of five engines and 38 firefighters were on the scene and used water jets to bring the fire under control, surround it and prevent it from spreading to adjoining trees.

Colleagues from Thames Valley Police and South Central Ambulance were also in attendance, and as the fire is likely to be burning for some time, firefighters remained on site overnight and throughout the day.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown and under investigation. It has also been reported to Thames Valley Police as being suspicious.
