The Banbury Guardian Chip Shop of the Year winner has been revealed after our readers voted for their favourite.
Hundreds of votes from across the area were received and counted with one clear winner – Grimsbury Fish Bar.
This is the second year in succesion Grimsbury Fish Bar has won the Banbury Guardian Chip Shop of the Year award, with the Middleton Road chippy is proving to be a firm favourite among the fish and chip buying public.
Owner George Xiourouppas and his staff beat competition from The Fairway Fish Bar, Queensway Fish Saloon, Banbury Fish Bar and A&C Fish Bar to take the honours.
The team is no stranger to winning awards – it also bagged the title of ‘Best Chippy Chips’ in Oxfordshire in a competition organised by the Potato Council to mark Chip Week in February this year.
This month, Grimsbury Fish Bar will be marking 30 years at its current location. Speaking to the Banbury Guardian, Mr Xiourouppas said his father, Banayiodis, opened his first fish and chip shop on Broad Street 36 years ago.
He said: “It started almost by accident. My father saw the shop on Broad Street, which my brothers Demetrious and Nickolas now own, and I got into it from there. It was a new thing for my father.”
Mr Xiourouppas opened his own fish and chip shop six years later.
He said: “I enjoy it and I am pleased with all of my customers.
“They have been lovely. Being here 30 years has been marvellous.”
On winning the award, Mr Xiourouppas said: “It is brilliant. I am ecstatic. It is amazing.
“We give good value for money; it is important to be nice to the customers and serve fresh food every day – that’s the trick.”
The Chip Shop of the Year contest launched back in February and was our readers’ chance to vote for their favourite fish and chip shop.
The nominations received created a final shortlist before readers were given time to vote for their favourite.
