Banbury’s Sea Cadets have received a boost of more than £1,100 to their funds thanks to the generosity of the town’s quizzers and shoppers.

Contestants at the Town Mayor’s Quiz on September 4 raised £500, and the town’s annual Street Organ Festival the next day raised a further £669.52.

Mayor Tony Mepham presented the cheque to cadets chairman Susan Davis.

Mr Mepham said: “The Sea Cadets is a valued organisation in the town. It is a charity that helps young people gain confidence in their own abilities and they learn the value of working as part of a team.

“It provides a wonderful grounding for the years ahead by teaching boys and girls social skills and a sense of responsibility. I am pleased to hand over this cheque for £1169.52, knowing it will be used to give young people a head start in life.”

Mrs Davis said: “We provide exciting activities that help our members achieve their full potential.

“This money will be spent in a positive way and I am grateful to the mayor for choosing us as the beneficiaries of his quiz night and the organ festival.”

The cadets meet at Space Studio Banbury, Aspirations Campus, Ruskin Road, from 6.45pm to 9pm every Monday and Thursday.
