Free event to help spot signs of child sexual exploitation in Banbury

On Monday, March 14 representatives from Cherwell District Council, Thames Valley Police and children’s charity Barnardos will host the free event at the council’s offices at Bodicote House.

The presentation will outline how employees working in the night time economy, such as bars, public transport and hotels can help to spot signs of abuse or the exploitation of children.

Councillor Tony Ilott, Cherwell’s lead member for public protection, said: “We are working together with Thames Valley Police and Barnardos to collectively make the district a safer place for everyone, particularly children.

“We want stakeholders and organisations to help be our eyes and ears across the district and alert us to any warning signs so we can intervene early and stop the abuse before it starts.

“Child sexual exploitation doesn’t just take place during daylight; it can happen anytime, anywhere so it is important we work with as many partners as possible. We want to throw a spotlight on the cover of darkness so that abusers have nowhere to hide.”

The 90-minute event will discuss situations which could be linked to abuse such as underage children drinking with older adults, suspicious hotel check-ins or young people who are out late at night.

The session will then outline how individuals can raise concerns to the relevant authorities to ensure children are protected and any risks are eliminated.

The event is free to attend and will take place at the Cherwell District Council offices from 10.30am – noon.
