The market stall’s focus was on sustainable living. Shoppers were offered free produce from gardens and allotments and invited to take ‘Pledges for the Planet’ to live more sustainably.

Group member Linda Newbery said: “Last Saturday, August 22, was Earth Overshoot Day – the point by which we’ve used up all the resources the planet can provide for the whole year.

"From this date on – more than a third of the year – we’re using more than the Earth can sustain. We have to find ways to cut down our impact on carbon emissions and waste.”

The weekend’s activities were a prelude to larger-scale actions in London and other cities, beginning this Tuesday.

Tila Rodriguez Past, organiser of the canalside display, said: “Sadly I won’t be joining the London Rebellion outside Parliament.

"However, I’m eager to see how it develops over the next few days. I really hope the government starts to treat the climate crisis with the urgency it desperately needs.”
