Leader of the council Kieron Mallon said: “This was an opportunity to take part in Recycle Week and highlight the dual importance of recycling and protecting of the planet.

“Banbury Town Council is already working on sustainability projects in its parks and cemeteries and is always careful to properly recycle its own waste.

“The council is very pleased to support WRAP on this occasion. Turning the town hall green should make people stop and think.”

WRAP works with governments, businesses and residents to use resources sustainably.

Recycle Week is a national awareness campaign that sets out the environmental benefits of re-using waste and encourages people to recycle more.

This year, Recycle Week is from September 21 to 27 with the theme ‘Thanking the Nation: Together We Recycle’.

Stephanie Campbell, WRAP’s project manager, said: “For the past 17 years Recycle Week has increased in popularity and motivates the nation to recycle more things more often.

“The town council’s floodlighting initiative was very welcome and a green town hall did a brilliant job of drawing attention to Recycle Week.

“Last year Recycle Week reached more than 16 million people, with 91 per cent of those who saw the campaign saying they recycled more than in the previous year.”
