A train driver got on the wrong train and then drove it in the wrong direction out of Banbury station, it has been revelaed.
The driver and train manager boarded a First Great Western service at Banbury on Easter Monday, which they believed was travelling from Swansea to London Paddington.
But, instead, they got on a train heading to Swansea, according to national media reports.
It is reported they realised their mistake a short while later before returning to Banbury – along with their Wales-bound passengers – in order to board the correct train.
The incident occured as Easter intercity services were being diverted via Banbury because of major engineering works at Reading.
First Great Western told the Railnews website: “We are looking into what happened. The crew got on the wrong train. We are really sorry about this.”
