Diamond duo in Adderbury celebrate 60 years of marriage

Eileen Fisher lives at Lake House in the village and her husband Maurice visits her every day. They were married on February 11 1956 and staff kept the plan for their special day a secret.

The surprise happened last Thursday due to Mrs Fisher being unwell, but on the day the couple enjoyed a Waltz dance before enjoying a cake and lunch which was provided by Lake House’s head chef Emma Willerton.

Mr and Mrs Fisher met in Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire while Mr Fisher was with the Royal Air Force and his wife-to-be was working in the civilian camp.

Mr Fisher then worked at car dealer Hartwell Banbury for 32 years on the service reception and Mrs Fisher was an auxiliary at the Horton General Hospital, mainly working nights.

They have three children, Stephen, Jane and Debbie, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Mr Fisher, 84, said: “It was absolutely marvellous. I always come in to see Eileen and I knew something was up as there was some staff whispering as I coming through the door.

“They took me through to a table in the dining hall and there was banners all across the room and a beautiful cake.”

Janice Lydon, activities organiser at Lake House added: “It was a fantastic and emotional day for everyone.”
