The Thames Valley Police officers used radar to check the driver's speed between Junctions 9 - 10 and recorded the speed at 126mph - 56mph over the 70mph limit.

The driver, they discovered, had only a provisional licence and should not have been driving on a motorway. Neither did the driver have insurance.

The officers said on Twitter: "There is no excuse for this level of speed on the M40 in Oxfordshire.

"When stopped it was also identified the driver was driving on a provisional licence and without insurance. They have been reported to court and will likely be banned from driving."
