Chipping Norton man who stabbed a pensioner is sentenced

Steven Williams, aged 44, of Hailey Road, Chipping Norton, was sentenced today, October 28, at Oxford Crown Court for a total of 18 years behind bars following his conviction yesterday.

On April 24 a 72-year-old woman contacted the ambulance service to report that Mr Williams had stabbed her in the neck.

The incident happened at a property in Hailey Avenue, Chipping Norton.

On arriving at the scene Thames Valley Police and the ambulance service team found the victim to be suffering from potentially life threatening stab wounds.

She was immediately taken to hospital where she received treatment for her injuries.

Mr Williams was arrested the following day and formally charged two days later.

Investigating officer, Det Insp Larry Johnson, based at Banbury police station, said: “I am very pleased with the outcome of this trial.

“Williams subjected the victim to a serious, unprovoked attack, which very nearly killed her.

“He also decided to plead not guilty, which has put the victim and her family through unnecessary further suffering and stress.

“I would like to commend the victim for a bravery throughout this process, and I hope that the lengthy sentence given to Williams helps in some way to help her and her family move on from this incident.”

Mr Williams was found guilty by a majority jury after a week long trial.
