Changing people’s preconceptions

Polite, welcoming and with a friendly smile, Graham and Lici Harris, are not perhaps the kind of couple you might expect to be running The Dog and Gun pub in North Bar, Banbury.

With six children between them, this family orientated couple are transforming the reputation of the town centre pub which had struggled with a falling reputation over the years.

Whilst welcoming their regulars to drink in an affordable safe environment, after two years in charge the couple are shifting perceptions of the venue which – once you shrug off your preconceptions and step across the threshold – is a pleasant place to enjoy a pint.

With a recently extended character bar and a large drinking area with solid wood tables and chairs, there is plenty of space for groups to gather, but also some nice snug areas where couples or friends can enjoy a quieter chat and chill.

One of the most surprising things is a well stocked library of books – free to read or borrow. Who would have thought The Dog and Gun has its own library! Offering coffees, teas, hot chocolates and muffins at half the price you would pay at some national coffee outlets, The Dog and Gun is well positioned for shoppers to drop in for a coffee, a read and a chill at the weekends, without breaking the bank.

And if you are thinking of starting your evening out in town but are feeling the post Christmas pinch, you can have a great night on cocktails, shots and beers at almost two thirds of the price you would pay anywhere else, before you hit the clubs in town.

Sports fans can take their pick of four screens and two separate operating systems at the pub and if what you want to see isn’t showing you can always request it.

Music fans will be delighted to know that instead of putting up with a dirge from an unwanted DJ, you can choose your own tunes with Friday night Karaoke, or the Saturday night disco where you can try to beat the DJ by choosing a tune he hasn’t got!

Then if you feel confident you can enter this year’s Dog Factor talent competition coming up in March and become a pub pop star.

The Dog and Gun is at 6 North Bar, Banbury.
