Crews arrived at Halt Farm at 6pm on March 29 and were faced with a large rapidly developing fire involving a waste stack of scrap cars, tyres and other metal and industrial waste.

Establishing that no one was missing or injured, crews surrounded the fire with three firefighting jets which stopped the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings and other waste metal stacks.

Due to the location, water supplies to extinguish the fire were limited and crews had to utilise a nearby stream and water carriers from across the county and a neighbouring county to extinguish the fire.

Crews had to tactically withdraw to a safe area as there were concerns that the waste metal stack may contain cylinders.

Group manager Paul Bremble said “Crews were faced with a large well-developed fire on arrival that was rapidly spreading to adjacent buildings and other areas of the scrap metal yard. Acting quickly the crews established water on the fire and stopped the fire from spreading to a building containing cylinders and a large quantity of tyres.

“There quick actions contained the fire and ensured that it could be brought under control quickly.
