An appeal has gone out to residents living in Banbury to help trace a flytipper who dumped more than 60 bags of rubbish at a recycling bank.
Cherwell District Council received a report last week from a resident that dozens of rubbish and carrier bags had been dumped at the recycling bank in Ferriston.
Although the majority of the bags contained textiles which can be recycled, the incident is being investigated as a flytip as the bags had been dumped in the car park, blighting the area for others.
Councillor Debbie Pickford, Cherwell’s lead member for clean and green, said: “Although we are not responsible for emptying these particular bring banks, we do monitor the area regularly and are disappointed to see the state this area was left in – particularly as the banks were not at capacity.
“However by just dumping the bags on the floor they have committed a criminal offence and spoilt the area for others. We don’t think it’s fair that a service funded by innocent taxpayers should have to pay to resolve this issue so we are seeking help to trace those responsible so we can bill them directly.”
The rubbish was cleared by council officers and sorted so the textiles could be sent for recycling.
Under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, it is an offence to dump rubbish in open spaces, including placing recyclable items on or next to recycling banks.
The council provides hundreds of recycling banks across the district for items including glass, clothing and scrap metal.
Councillor Pickford added: “This incident is a perfect example of the difference that can be made by taking the time to dispose of things properly. Had the offender taken just a few minutes to put the textiles in the banks, they would have made a significant recycling contribution and left the area tidy.”
