Banbury Town Council leader Kieron Mallon has today (Thursday) confirmed the council has expressed an interest in adopting the red phone box in South Bar which is the home of the Phone Box Library.

Mr Mallon said: “Banbury Town Council have expressed an interest and have made an offer to BT who have said they will consider our request.”

But he added people campaigning to keep the phone box library need to be careful other members of the community are not alienated.

He said: “What you have to remember is that the people who use this phone box, which is just outside St John’s Church, are not the ones using Twitter, blogs or Facebook and we would not like to see the loss of a phone in that location.

“Banbury Town Council would be willing to adopt the phone box but I am sure no one would like to see the phone decommissioned so all sides will need to be considered.

“The ball is very much in BT’s court but if there is a way of combining a proper working phone and the library we would be willing to adopt the phone box.”
